A Woman Of No Importance
A Woman of No Importance was an acoustic indie-pop band from Newcastle and Durham in the north east of England. The band embraces pop sensibilities but has a strong DIY ethic and a love for odd instruments and lush string arrangements.
The band started out as an acoustic guitar duo - Marc on main vocals and left-hand guitar, Matt on backing vocals and right-hand guitar. After playing together for some time in and around the Tyne & Wear area, they decided to expand their sound and added a drummer (Andrew, Matt's younger brother) and bassist (Rye).
Matt started experimenting with wine glasses after watching a documentary on Björk, and soon after developing this idea followed songs including melody harp and a button melodian. These forrays into new aural horizons brought on the addition of a small string section - Clare on violin and Sarah on cello - which has added a sense of grandeur to their music.
