Altitude
There is more than one artist who goes by the name Altitude:
1) Steve Gibbs was born in 1976 in Adelaide, Australia and is a classically trained musician having played the piano, guitar and violin from the age of 5. He studied Classical and Jazz Piano for 12 years before completing a diploma in Audio Engineering. In 1992 at the tender age of 16 he was hanging out in clubs and absorbing the new wave of dance music that was sweeping the underground club scene of Australia. By the time he was 18 he had begun producing and DJ'ing, playing in local clubs and raves around the country.
Having established himself as a regular name on the Australian circuit, including performing at high profile gigs such as supporting Bjork and The Prodigy on their Australian tours, Steve decided in 1996 to move overseas to pursue his recording career. Since then he has released over 30 singles on some of the coolest labels in the universe encompassing all styles of dance music and has seen his tracks supported by the worlds biggest and best DJ's. In the last few years things have really taken off with Steve’s Altitude project being signed onto Sony UK having achieved huge success with the club hit ‘Excession.'
Altitude ‘Excession’ was one of the Ibiza anthems of 2001, with massive support from Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Judge Jules etc and has since been licensed onto countless compilations including Pete Tong’s 'Essential Selection Ibiza', Gatecrasher 'Discotech Generations' and Slinky 'Technique'. It was signed onto Sony from its home on the cult label Bonzai following a bidding war. The follow up single Altitude ‘Nightstalker’ was even more successful, entering the cool cuts, hype and club charts and being licensed for compilations including Paul Oakenfold’s 500,000 selling 'Travelling', Dave Pearce 'Euphoria', Lee Burridge’s Global Underground and James Lavelle’s 'Fabric Live'.
The third Altitude single, cunningly titled ‘Altitude’ smashed up the clubs in 2002, large with DJ’s such as Ferry Corsten (who licensed it for his World Tour Tokyo album), Armin Van Buuren, Dave Pearce, Matt Hardwick, Tiesto and Jules. It achieved top 10 placings in the UK and Netherlands national club charts, was played 4 weeks running by Judge Jules on Radio One (winning the Judge It Yourself peoples vote) and has been licensed for more than 20 compilations including Clubbers Guide to Ibiza 2002 and Gatecrasher Digital Trance. The fourth Altitude single ‘Tears in the Rain’ heralded a change of label to Platipus and found favour with DJ’s such as Armin, Tiesto and Paul van Dyk who commented it had ‘the finest breakdown he’d ever heard.’ The latest Altitude single 'Sunray' was released this year on Five AM with an excellent remix from Belgian superstar producer 'Airwave' which was huge with Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Agnelli & Nelson and all the usual suspects and has already been licensed for several compilations.
In this period he also released work on the acclaimed progressive house label Gekko, the debut single Tremor ‘Meia Lua’ was large with Tiesto, Armin etc, has appeared on Gatecrasher and Godskitchen albums and featured on the eagerly awaited Tiesto compilation ‘In Search Of Sunrise 3.' Also he branched out into breakbeat with his SubHQ project which made it’s debut on Acetate Ltd with ‘The Abyss’ which made the top 10 in the DJ magazine breaks chart and found favour with DJ’s such as The Plump DJs, Tayo and Paul Oakenfold. Steve also found time to compile and mix the double cd chillout album ‘The Art of Chill’ which features tracks from artists such as Sinead O’Connor, Charlotte Church, Paul Oakenfold and Steve himself and is currently out through Sony/3MV. He also mixed the double CD 'Platipus Euro' for legendary UK trance imprint Platipus Records.
Despite his considerable success in the Trance/Progressive fields Steve has always produced different genres of music and in 2005 signed his first House track to the hot London based Eye Industries label, home to House superstars Full Intention, Junior Jack and Mike Gray. Eye Industries recently had a worldwide smash with Mike Gray's 'The Weekend' which was one of the biggest tracks on the planet last year and Steve is very excited to be joining their exclusive roster of House producers. The debut track for his new act Sound of Soho is called 'Take My Love' and will be released on Eye Industries/Universal in 2006. Steve also has upcoming releases on Enhanced Records (Altitude 'Flood Warning') and 23rd Precinct Records (Altitude feat. Marcella Woods 'Break of Dawn').
Steve has DJ’ed in various cities around the world including Hong Kong, New York, Milan and London. He has recently performed guest DJ mixes for various radio stations around the country including Galaxy FM, Ministry of Sound radio, Southern FM and Beat 106 FM in Scotland, as well as radio stations in Belgium, France, Greece and Ibiza and is also fast becoming one of the most sought after remixers in the business having completed remixes for the likes of Ruff Driverz ‘Dreaming’ (Inferno), Jan Johnson ‘Superstar’ (Perfecto), Jurgen Vries ‘The Theme’ (Direction), M-Factor ‘Mother’(Serious), James Holden ‘One 4 You’ (Sony), Airwave ‘Above the Sky’ (Bonzai) and Krystal K ‘Get It Right’ (Incentive).
In 2006 Steve is looking to push things forward with upcoming releases on Monster Tunes Classics (new mixes of his massive 2003 hit Altitude 'Altitude'), Alter Ego Records (Altitude 'Flood Warning' out soon with excellent mixes from hot newcomers Signalrunners and Freedom Tribe) and an upcoming monthly radio show on one the biggest internet stations, DI.FM.
2) 1990's female R&B trio consisting of Pamela Baker, Tamela Gibbs and Terrah Smith.
