Audra
There are 2 artists using the name Audra :
1. Audra is an Arizona-based band formed in 1991 in Mesa, Arizona by brothers Bret and Bart Helm. Audra broke out onto the national scene in 2000 when they signed with indie label, Projekt Records. After two well-received albums and well-over 300 live performances, the band decided to leave Projekt and go back to the ‘do-it-yourself’ approach that started their career in the 90s.
The band gained the attention of Davey Havok, lead singer of AFI, who chose Audra’s 2002 album Going To The Theatre as one of his top 10 CDs of the year. The next year, AP Magazine selected Audra as one of the top ten bands on the scene. 11 songs from their first two albums were featured throughout three seasons of MTV’s The Real World and several independent films.
On May 19, 2009, Audra released 'Everything Changes,' their first album in 7 years. It was recorded in Tempe, AZ at Uranus Recording (owned by Robin Wilson, lead singer of Gin Blossoms, and produced by Robb Vallier (Dave Stewart, Paul McCartney, Wailing Souls, Peter Murphy, R. Kelly).
At the end of 2009, Audra was added to a couple of dates on the Nitzer Ebb tour and performed a sold out show with AFI on January 30, 2010.
2. A female vocalist interprets a mixture of original and cover songs with a touch of blues, swing, soul, gypsy jazz, and folk.
Audra is a native Californian singer, equally at home with all opera, jazz, and country. She grew up listening to radio and from her earliest age was singing all over the house while listening to her grandfather’s 78 swing records and making up silly songs and playing 'name that tune' with her brothers, her uncle and his guitar. Years later, she studied classical voice and graduated from Chapman University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. She enjoys the dramatic, delicate, and intricate nature of classical voice, but jazz, blues and country (and the more relaxed genres) are her style. Some of her favorite artists are Chet Baker, Patsy Cline, Mel Torme, and Elvis.
For years, she has written songs but never had the music worked out but that all changed the night she attended an open mic in Paris, one week before she had plans to move away from the city of lights. Here, she met Pascal, and once they started talking, they found that each had a key to a new musical collaboration et voila, the magic was born. The next night, they had their first song. She did leave but one month later, returned from Berlin to continue writing and they prepared to record their originals along with some popular tunes, (standards mostly), and some favorites and new arrangements that grab the publics attention while busking. What you are about to listen to is a blend of their favorite songs and genres.
