Bembe Segue
Singer, composer, producer, DJ, poet, arranger, Bembe Segue’s influences range from Doug & Jean Karn and pretty much anything on the Black Jazz & Strata East labels, fusing Brazillian and Afro Cuban beats with an ever present hip hop darkness. Throw in a bit of 60’s folk and Charles Stepney-esque vocal arrangements and you might just begin to get the beginnings of the picture of her musical soundscapes.
A vinyl junkie from the age of 14 the vinyl was her education, she has honed her style under several different monikers, working prolifically with producer IG Culture- she feature on all the early IG produced New Sector Movements releases on People records (see attached discography) as well as Likwid Biskit and Da One Away releases . The first single as Bembe Segue (which started off as an ambitious live project co-produced by IG and Dego (4Hero) released on IG’s own Main Squeeze label received rapturous reception on the underground.
She was an intrinsic part of the vibe that created the West London Broken Beat scene working extensively with Kaidi Tatham (Agent K) Orin Walters * Daz `IQ – Bugz In The Attic, Mark de Clive-Lowe etc as well as appearing on Seiji and G-force’s album released on Re-inforced. That and her collaborations with I.G and Dego all led to her being fondly appointed the mantle “Queen of Broken Beat” however her music is much much more diverse than just that sound.
Further collaborations with Dego led to her appearance on the 4 Hero album Creating Patterns, as well as guesting on Dego’s re-vamp of the Roy Ayers classic 2000 Black where she sings alongside the man himself. She works regularly with Dego who along with IG will be producing the majority of the tracks on her forthcoming album which is currently in the making. Read more on Last.fm.
