Bernoldus Niemand
Bernoldus Niemand was one of the many names under which James Phillips, the pioneering South African rock musician, performed during the 1980s.
Born in Springs on the East Rand (near Johannesburg) in 1959, Phillips grew up under Apartheid, and South African politics influenced much of his music, both in terms of content and style. He performed in a variety of bands, including Corporal Punishment, Illegal Gathering and The Cherry Faced Lurchers.
He was part of the ground-breaking Voƫlvry rock tour of 1989.
Phillips died of injuries following a car crash outside Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape in 1995. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
