Chicago Public Media
Chicago Public Media is a non-profit media agency located in Chicago, Illinois that focuses on public affairs programming. Some of its best known shows include 'This American Life', 'Sound Opinions', and 'Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!' These are often available as free podcasts through services such as iTunes.
The Chicago Board of Education originally started it as extension service as 'WBEZ' in 1943. It initially broadcast educational programs while Chicago Public Schools were in session. The station was one of the first charter member stations of National Public Radio (NPR) in 1970. It fell under the new independent community non-profit WBEZ Alliance, Inc. in 1990. In April 2010, Chicago Public Media's Board of Directors formally adopted the name "Chicago Public Media".
The agency has the mission statement:
"Chicago Public Media serves the public interest by creating and delivering diverse, compelling content that informs, inspires, enriches and entertains. Through a broad range of media platforms, we connect diverse audiences in our service area and beyond to one another. We help them make a difference in our communities, our region, and our world."
