1) It began Spring of '86 when a poorly-recorded WKKC 89.3 FM mixtape fell into his hands.
A close cousin had provided him with a new style of music that would change his life forever. Although the seeds of house music were planted in the culture rich pockets of Chicago during the late 70's and early 80's, its presence had yet to be felt in the fertile farmlands of the Mississippi Delta.
And down deep in Greenwood, Mississippi, spring would also baptize a new disciple of underground ambience.
It's a fact that Chris Gray had a bad reaction to house music when he listened for the first time … but just like fine wine and exotic cuisine, Chris would develop a taste for that essence of life that many of us crave. He began devouring the new house ambrosia with uncontrollable addiction.
Chris collected a wide variety of house mixes from all over the globe. This hobby would ultimately inspire him to develop The Deephouse Projekt in 1990.
This project is Chris' ongoing search to explore and understand the roots of house music and its perpetual migrations. Phone and the internet produced many credible sources who would teach him about house music's controversial history. Sources include those who were present at the original Warehouse, Bismark and other legendary Chicago nightclubs that were shelters for the house community.
So inspired, he embarked upon his own pilgrimage by blindly relocating to Chicago. It was 1992 and time to chase yet another dream after completing his bachelors of arts in broadcast news at Mississippi State University.
There wasn't tangible evidence that it was Chris' destiny to make a mark in Chicago, but he quickly settled in and continued his work there anyway. And by the way, he'd never visited the city before moving. Chris quickly learned that politics and greed were present in many facets of Chicago life and unfortunately the house scene wasn't an exception.
But Chris refused to get involved with negative fraternization and instead allowed an ancient spirit to be resurrected though his music.
It is this very spirit that helps him and others that are sincerely devoted to continue the upliftment and exploration of this unique music form.
