Chris Lilley
Chris Lilley is an Australian observational/character comedian from Sydney, Australia. He is probably most famous for the hit TV show 'Summer Heights High', in which he plays three characters - that of the all-singing, all-dancing performing arts teacher Mr. G; private school drama-queen Ja'mie; and the rebellious Year 8 student Jonah. Various musical clips have been taken from the show, and have been made available on iTunes.
Lilley's career has included stints as the 'MSN Butterfly' for TV commercials, and characters in Channel 7s 'Big Bite' (including an early incarnation of Mr.G, see above). However he is best known for his his own 'mockumentries', the first being 'We Can Be Heroes', which won an Australian Logie for Most Outstanding Comedy Program in 2006. It follows the story of six 'potential Australians of the Year', all played by Lilley - including the very popular character of Ricky Wong, an Australian-Chinese university student with a love for the theatre. Other characters included Pat Mullins (who wanted to roll from Perth to Uluru), Daniel Sims (a farm boy who gives up an eardrum for his deaf twin), Phil Olivetti (a once heroic police officer), and the above mentioned private school girl Ja'mie King, who Lilley has taken into his next project.
'Summer Heights High', airing in Australia in late 2007, while somewhat controversial, has been a huge success. It highlights many exsisting issues in contemporary Australian secondary schools, with the trademark parodic twist that Lilley brings. The storyline follows the three characters through a typical school term, focusing on Jonah's behavioural problems, Ja'mie's quest for the perfect Year 11 formal, and of course, the school musical Mr. G directs, centred around the overdose of a student and... himself.
