Christian Prommer's Drumlesson
Munich's Christian Prommer has risen to prominence as a producer and DJ whilst working as a member of Fauna Flash, Truby Trio and Voom:Voom alongside Peter Kruder. For this latest endeavour, Prommer has rounded up a troupe of jazz musicians to tackle acoustic versions of techno classics. Some of you may have already come across these guys tackling a cover of Derrick May's Detroit classic 'Strings Of Life', and as that recording suggested, there's more mileage in this project than the slightly daft concept suggests.
Other tracks include an unexpectedly successful reading of Kraftwerk's 'Trans Europe Express', Isolee's 'Beau Mot Plage' and tracks by techno icons like Mr Fingers and Patrick Pulsinger. Prommer and his fellow musicians do an especially admirable job of tackling Josh Wink's 'Higher State Of Consciousness'. Given that the narrative of the original was pretty much exclusively based around filter modulations, these guys do a pretty stand-up job of converting the piece in to some form of minimal chamber jazz. You'll notice the ominous 'Vol.1' tacked onto the end of the title, suggesting there's more to come from this frankly rather bizarre project, but after this first, improbably appealing instalment you might just find yourself getting excited about the prospect of a second volume.
