Dominic Ward is an English Singer-songwriter whose music is regularly compared with artists like Simon-Garfunkel, James Taylor and Cat Stevens. His lyrical and eclectic folk compositions are totally unique in their composition and in the lyrics, which are at once strong and yet subtle.
His debut solo album 'Simon in the Wilderness' followed his departure from a musical career with long time friend Stephen Wilson (co-founder of the English folk duo, Maeran), when the latter chose to pursue a monastic vocation with the benedictine monks of Douai, in Reading, England. In similar vein to his compositions for Maeran, renowned for their unpredictable range of musical styles that moved easily from plain chant to contemporary folk and often combined various genres, Dominic has continued to produce music that cannot be confined to a typical style, and this remains one of the great appeals of his work.
Dominic is currently working on a new album of songs entitled 'Gabriel's Canticle'. Driven very much by the early influences of childhood musical hero, Paul Simon, it has some fantastic guitar work in and some superb melodies and harmonies to entertain those who look for ballad driven work.
Dominic's music is reminiscent of a period in musical history when musicians wrote their own songs rather than reproducing the work of others, and wrote with feeling, depth and imagination, hence the inevitable comparisons mentioned above. His guitar work and musicianship is outstanding, playing a variety of additional instruments including keyboards, mandolin, percussion, whistles and banjos (which are his own creations). In the recording and production of his music there is something of Mike Oldfield about Dominic who plays all the tracks, sings and does the mixing and finalising. A true indie musician his music has gained wide appeal and is listened to in many countries around the world.
In a generation that is becoming frustrated with the lack of creativity and imagination in mainstream commercial music, and with young people being fed a musical diet largely of musac it is refreshing to find musicians of Dominic's calibre who are keeping the old traditions of musical craft alive.
