Elkin Marin
Elkin was born in Colombia to an Italian father and a Spanish-Colombian mother. He had always loved music and taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 6 and was already composing his own songs at 8. He was so talented that at only 14, he had been discovered by a TV producer and was starring in his own program on Radio Caracas Television in Venezuela. That year he also released his first album, which became #1 in the Latin-American charts and won the Venezuelan Onda Award for Most Promising Artist of the Year.
One of the top music producers in Spain at that time took Elkin to New York to record his second album which was released in Europe and quickly became another chart-topper. At 16, Elkin decided to move to Europe permanently to be able to work on more albums and concert tours. He has performed in concerts and worked on recordings with many of the most recognizable names in the music industry such as the Rolling Stones, Yes, Ringo Starr, Julio Iglesias, Tom Jones, Sergio Mendez, Paco de Lucia, among others. To date, he has 12 international albums with CBS, Sony and PolyGram, on his own and with his brother Nelson.
One of their biggest successes is their hit song “Jibaro” which was first released in their album, “Elkin & Nelson” in 1972. Jibaro became the anthem for acid house music, which originated on the island of Ibiza, and from it came the term, “Balearic Beat”, the ultimate description for this new sound. Jibaro was so popular that it has since been recorded by several other artists, including Paul Oakenfold who remixed it for the 1988 Vanessa Williams film, “Dance With Me”.
Elkin was also one of the pioneers of Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza, which later became an international phenomenon for chill-out music. Elkin worked with international producer and DJ Mark Summers and recently released the world chill-out album entitled “Exotica”, which was recorded in India. Despite a hectic schedule with their rapidly growing company, yet another project is in the works.
Getting to know people in the design industry like Yves St Laurent, Kenzo, and Pierre Cardin was very interesting to Elkin who had already developed his own sense of style. He learned that there were other outlets for his creative talents and began to study the intricacies of artistic design.
