EXTENDED BIOGRAPHY:
Jonny Blu was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and from an early age he was exposed to music, language, and world cultures. He also comes from a creative line, including his father, Reuben Klamer, who is the creator of the famous board game "The Game of Life". Starting from the age of only six years, while his mom, Shary Klamer, spent nights at law school, both Music and Asian culture became a major part of Jonny’s life because it was then that Jonny began studying martial arts and began voice study, both of which he has continued to the present.
In China— Mandarin Pop
Eastern philosophies have always been a passion of Jonny’s, as well as an academic focus. Studying at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he was unable to fully immerse himself within these teachings, so in 1997 he applied for and was admitted into a highly exclusive program to study in Beijing at Peking University. Jonny would then spend the next two years studying Chinese language and culture in Bejing and traveling extensively throughout China and Southeast Asia. From this experience, he not only improved his Chinese speaking, reading, and writing skills to relative fluency, but he also gained a love for Asia and its people that most Westerners never get a chance to understand. After graduating with honors from UCLA, inspiration struck Jonny in 2001 after he entered and won a Chinese singing competition in Los Angeles. It was then that he was discovered by a Taiwanese TV network, ETTV. An executive there began sending Jonny out to perform at events around California. He also toured (as the only non-Chinese singer) through the Mandarin singing competition circuits in the US and placed first in several events. The step that finally pushed him into the International Mandarin Pop spotlight was when he made it to the International finals of the CCTV International Singing Competition ...this was the boost he needed to make this a true career. Jonny is currently living in between Hong Kong and Shanghai and Los Angeles pursuing a completely unprecedented approach to the world music scene. He not only sings in Mandarin (and English), but he writes his own lyrics (in Chinese) and co-produces his music (with well-known Music Producer Myke Aaron). Jonny says that his thought process for writing his songs begins and ends thinking only in Chinese (not by translating). His style is a mix of R&B, electronica, and western pop, blended with a Mandarin pop feel. His favorite songs to write are simple and unadorned love ballads, but don’t count out his love for performing energetic pop and hip-hop rhythms.
In 2004 Jonny appeared as himself in the Disney blockbuster movie "Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement" and he received an RIAA Certified Gold Record in the USA for his song on the soundtrack.
In October of 2004 Jonny signed with See Music in Hong Kong, China and has since released his 1st Mandarin Pop Album, including the 3 chart topping Mandarin songs "On the Edge," "The Apology,"and "Crossroads"(all written and produced by Jonny), and he has appeared in several television and radio shows throughout southern China. Jonny was also voted as "Hot New Sound" at the 2005 Metro Music Awards in Hong Kong, which has never before been achieved by a non-Chinese. Jonny Blu is the first ever Caucasian artist to have successfully entered the Chinese music market in the history of the music business.
In The USA— Swing, Pop and Big Band Jazz
In 2005, Blu began a project in Los Angeles, recording some swing and jazz songs which he had written over the years along with some classic standards which had been favorites of his. Heavily influenced by artists like Harry Connick Jr. in his early life (and more recently Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Brian Setzer), Blu recorded his first independent Swing/Jazz album "In Just That Kind Of A Mood". After finding licensing opportunities for some of his songs, including ''In Just That Kind Of A Mood'' and ''Ooh-Wee'' (which were featured on The Young and The Restless in 2007, 2008 and 2009), Blu decided to drop everything in China, move back to the United States and take a risk on initiating his music career back home. Returning to his musical roots in Swing, Pop and Jazz, Blu began writing and recording more original songs in the genre which would ultimately set him apart from major label singers like Michael Bublé, Jamie Cullum, and Harry Connick Jr.. Blu has since had his album '"In Just That Kind Of A Mood" released in Eastern Europe by Universal Music Group (2008), released a new Swing/Big Band EP "In A Groove" (2008), been featured on multiple Swing and Smooth Jazz Compilation CDs (''see Discography'') and recorded a Latin Standards project with Peer Music.
His albums "In Just That Kind Of A Mood" and "In A Groove" are a collection of original songs penned by Jonny (and some classic standards) and co-produced with his longtime producer, Producer Myke Aaron.
Blu has for the past few years performed extensively to sold out crowds at famous Jazz Clubs and venues like, Iridium Jazz Club in New York, Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, Vibrato Jazz in Bel Air, California, Anthology in San Diego and SoHo Music Club in Santa Barbara, CA, to name a few. A tour in and outside of California is being planned for 2010. Jonny's new album "Taboo!" (in conjunction with Peer Music) was officially released on October 6, 2009 with his first promotional shows in New York on September 12, 2009 at Iridium Jazz Club in New York City and on December 15, 2009 at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Jazz Club in Los Angeles, CA.
