bio
Karl Möstl, who is very well-known as the producer of the successful electronic-duo ‚walkner.möstl‚, and one of the outstanding artists on g-stone (the Kruder & Dorfmeister label) now makes his own way in life after some outstanding productions and remixes for: Tosca, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Trio Electrico, Vienna Scientists, Eric Fisher and Cafe Drechsler.
The style of the new CD from this artist - from Linz, Austria - can not easily be classified, but it is still very typical of his work. It hovers between slow-motion Funk, heavily positive Dub-electronics - via fresh Nu-Jazz grooves - Break, House elements & beats to a straight Tech-House style. Everything is possible, and this was entirely intentional. Nothing is more refreshing, and fascinating, than creating a style which is not classifiable. This seems to be his rule of life.
This musician - who was born on the 24th of Dec, 1967 ˆ has experienced, and played, all kinds of music styles like: Punk, Brit-pop, Grunge, Avant-garde, Crossover, etc., and feels at ease with every one of them.
His first great successes were releases on the Sabotage and g-stone labels.
He is now presenting his first solo album, "Touching This", on Edel records/mouth to mouth. Once again, he succeeds with a fine mix of different styles like Dub, Jazz, Soul, Latin, House, Chansons and D&B, which are refined by exquisite vocals. It is a musical journey into the universe of the finest electronic music available.
"I want to warm the heart, enlighten the soul and make butts shake ∑"
This vision and competence was most certainly created by his many years of DJing and live performances.
Whether as a DJ - providing a unique party atmosphere - or as live musician, together with percussionist Hannes Dullinger and vocalist Gabrielle Hänninen, he has always guaranteed an atmospheric, groovy, and unforgettable performance.
Is his life music? No, his life is music.
Interview
How would you generally describe your album, "Touching This"?
Karl Möstl:
From a musical point of view I love a totally different mix of music styles like, Dub, Jazz, Soul, Latin, House, Chansons and Drum & Bass, which are refined by superb vocals.
From an emotional point of view, I love fine, atmospheric, touching, moving, groovy and melodic music at the same time; light but still profound. But everything must have the typical ‚Moestl-Sound‚.
What‚s the personal significance of this album for you?
It contains a lot of messages, which are personal as well as spiritual. The title, ‚Touching This‚, symbolizes being touched by the moment. Judging by what is happening right now, without giving it too much thought, is to feel what is happening. The more you feel, and the less you think, the more you are at the moment, and music is simply one of the best ways to reach this state. There is no front or back, no left or right, no black or white, no past or present. You follow the groove, the sound, the atmosphere, and that‚s it.
How did the album originate, and what was your working method?
I have more than hundreds of layouts in reserve. From time to time I work through them and see how each one of them is doing, to see f they contain anything of interest or not. Of course, I develop new ideas all the time, and also try to realize a lot of visions, but sometimes it goes in another direction. It doesn‚t matter at all if it is a groove, a sample, a harmony or a sound, the only interesting thing is what‚s happening and what comes out of it at the end.
Who cooperated on the album?
This time I worked with different vocalists: Andrew Edge (Leeds, Northern England) Betty S. (London). I finally had the opportunity to work with two of my favorite singers from my hometown: Diana Jirkuff and Gabriella Hänninen. Of course, there was also space for Sugar B. on the album. For some of the percussion/bush-drums I chose Fred Hintenaus ˆ but everything else, from the beginning to the end, I did by myself.
What can you tell me about your previous creations?
When you‚ve made music for more than 18 years there are a lot of stories to tell, especially as I went through so many different phases and styles. I started with Punk, Pop, Funk and Electronics, until I got to where I am now. This is my territory, and this is where I belong. That there have also been some lucky moments, such as the releases on g-stone, but I don‚t believe in coincidences.
How did you end up with Mouth to Mouth Records?
Everything started when I did a One-Night-Stand Remix for Wolfgang Muthspiel, when Alex Deutsch came along as a percussionist. Back then, he had the idea of creating his own label - Mouth to Mouth. He said, "Watch out, you‚re gonna produce a record and I‚m gonna create my own label, and then we‚ll see ∑" He kept his promise, and so did I, and now a lot of good things are happening because of this connection.
