Samantha Crain & The Midnight Shivers
For those of you who think Oklahoma hasn’t birthed much musical talent since Woody Guthrie, prepare to be wowed by Choctaw singer-songwriter Samantha Crain. The Shawnee, Oklahoma native has an impressive performance schedule lined up this spring, including a national tour with Anti- recording artist William Elliott Whitmore, SXSW and North Carolina’s Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music. The 22-year-old Crain and her band, the Midnight Shivers (featuring Jacob Edwards on drums, Andrew Tanz on bass and Stephen Sebastian on electric guitar), release their full-length debut Songs in the Night via Ramseur Records on April 28. The overall sound is rootsy, fitting into a genre we’re calling eerie Americana, since topics are often dark and troubled. Characters find their perfect day for dying (“Bananafish Revolution”) and sickness is all-consuming (“Get the Fever Out”), but Crain’s acoustic guitar and train-like percussion (compliments of bandmate Edwards) keep the energy high. If you’re not curious yet, Crain’s melancholy alto—delicate and tender at times, but always strong enough to deliver her words with conviction—is reason enough to become a dedicated fan.
