Senju Akira
One of the most important and acclaimed in Japan, Senju Akira (千住明) is an multi-talented artist whose scope of the work ranges from contemporary music, and symphonic works, to musicals, films or production work for pop artists.
Senju Akira was born in Tokyo in 1960. In 1981, he left the engineering department of Keio University to study musical composition. In 1984, he found himself enrolled at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo in a Major composition. After graduating in 1988, he tried the Graduate School of the University where he continued his studies with Hiroaki Minami and Toshiro Mayuzumi. In 1990, he received his Master's degree (summa cum laude) in composition. His work "Eden" for computer was purchased by the University.
His symphonies were interpreted by Philharmonia, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Krakow, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, members of the theater dell'Opera in Rome, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra , the Philharmonic Orchestra International Moscow Symphony Orchestra NHK and many others. "SERENADE – a composition for solo violin" was interpreted by Mariko Senju, a violinist, at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York in February 1999.
His compositions for the film "Night Train to the stars" and "Beggining for love", earned him the 20th and 22nd Japan Academic Prize in 1997 and 1999. In 1999, he won the TOYP Award in Japan. His tunes for the drama "Strawberry on the Sorhtcake" won the 28th price of music Academic Drama Award 2001. He received positive reviews including the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times for his music on "The mistery of Rampo”.
In addition to his many talents, it is hard to believe that he could still find time to train young artists: he has been actively involved as a senior lecturer at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo and at Keio University.
