Ska-J
SKA-J play jazz music, interpreted in afro-jamaican style. The band live set is mostly acoustic, made up by voice (three singers), drums, guitar, double-bass, Hammond organ, two saxophones and a trombone. In the last two years Ska-j have enhanced the band with a female voice and the Hammond organ. SKA-J have been playing live on both local and national televisions (RAI, RockTv, Sky), various national and independent radio networks: the most important shows are several participations at Caterpillar’s events, a popular show on Rai RadioDue . The band has been broadcasted on Radio jazz 90.1 of Rochester, N.Y. Since the group was born, in 2002, Ska-J have been playing about 300 gigs mostly around Italy and also in Europe, with notable excursions (11 gigs in 2006, two participations in German Jazz Festivals). In 2008 Ska-j have been busy promoting their latest album, ADESSO EH, which came out at the end of 2007. Many events have been taking place to promote the album; a special one is the limited edition of vynil Long-Playings: their covers have been painted by two venetian artists, Serena Nono and Daniele Bianchi. The paintings-records have been exhibited at the cultural centre of the island of S.Servolo, with a concert/performance of the band during the opening. The same year, Doctor Ring-Ding italian tour had SKA-J as backing band. The album TEÈK came out in May 2005, and sold 1500 copies in 7 months, being also distributed in Germany through Mad Butcher. Various italian jazz players collaborated at the recording: Riccardo Tesi from Banda Italiana, Sandro Gibellini and David Boato, and the great “Banda Osiris”. In 2004 the cd MEN IN THE STREET came out, a live recording of the summer gigs. Still in 2004 Ska-j went on their first european tour, being invited to perform at some jazz festivals in Austria and Germany (Kemptener Jazz Fruhling). In May 2003 Ska-J realized the videoclip of the track “Quizas, quizas, quizas …” which was presented at the XXVI Girofestival (shown on national channel 3 of RAI tv). They also recorded together with Banda Osiris the theme song for the Cateraduno (the annual gathering of the radio show): “Movite”, and two themes songs for tv and radio programs. In 2003 SKA-J recorded the cd VENICE GOES SKA, their first album: it was distributed by KOB in Italy and by Mad butcher in North Europe. It sold 3000 copies, mainly during the band ‘s gigs. During the promotional tour the band played more than 60 concerts, besides performing on various promotional happenings in Radio stations and showcases (see i.e. www.kataweb.it/community/live/skaj/index.html). In the same year they appeared on various compilations: Caterpillar volume 6 (ed. Ala Bianca), one by the German music magazine CLARINO, and SKANNIBAL PARTY (ed. Mad Butcher). In the year the band was born, during carnival 2002, it played as guest band at the concerts of The Wailers, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble and Skatalites.
