The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band
Bergen, Norway, late-90s: Two friends, guitarist and singer Rolf Edvardsen and bassist Truls “Biff” Eriksen, are at an impasse. Looking for a new approach to music, something different from the metal and pop stylings of their previous bands, they ironically turn their attention to something very old; the glorious technicolor explosion that is psychedelic progressive music.
Buoyed by a steady diet of both old- school luminaires like King Crimson, 13th Floor Elevators and Pink Floyd and newer astral travelers like The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Supergrass they soon get their creative juices flowing and find themselves awash with exiting new songs and sounds. Two brothers, Thomas and Øyvind Grønner (drums and organ/guitar, respectively) complete the line- up and the band is named Brimstone.
From the get- go Brimstone is an impressive beast live, marrying impressive musicianship with high- energy performances and quality songwriting. They are soon in high demand as a live act, touring all over Norway and most of Scandinavia. Via the underground psych/prog network they also travel to Britain, Spain, France and Germany playing their own special brand of prog-a-delic space rock.
The first Brimstone studio product, “Going Out EP”, was released in 2001, and spanned the radio hit “The Magic Dragon” an garnered very favorable reviews, as did their subsequent LPs “Solar Radiation Band” (2004), the country- tinged “Solstice” (2007) and the multi-instrument extravaganza that is “Smorgasbord” (2011). Their new album “Mannsverk” is scheduled for release in March 2014, and presents a meaner, leaner, hungrier and proggier Brimstone than ever.
