The Original Surfaris
The Surfaris of Wipe Out fame had derived their name through combining that of vocal group the Safaris with the word surf. It was a neat idea and perhaps no great surprise that another group from Southern California had thought of it first. However, because the success of Wipe Out had established them nationally, a court decision allowed the hit group to keep the name and forced the others to change theirs to the Original Surfaris. This group released six singles on six different labels through 1963 and 1964 and appeared on many compilation albums, frequently billed as just the Surfaris. One single, Moment Of Truth, was released nationally by Reprise in May '63 and they also contributed five tracks to the Reprise album "Surf's Up At Banzai Pipeline". Read more on Last.fm.
