Originally under the name Asterisk, The Pillars Of Creation is a solo lo-fi electronic project formed in Chicago Illinois, USA in 2008 by Marc "Charlie Brown" Zielinski of DJ Downtown Charlie Brown fame. His music is said to be a synth trip to a beach in space. Space being one of his biggest inspirations.
The Pillars Of Creation is the name giving to the famous 1995 Hubble Space Telescope photo of the Eagle Nebula (M16). Being inspired by space itself, Marc set out to make this iconic name the forefront to his electronic musical career.
Born in 1986 in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, this up & coming musician was surrounded at an early age by music. While most fathers of this time were into your standard radio hits, his looked onto a more underground and innovative scene. His dad being a part-time DJ at the time had all your standard music on hand but had a hobby of playing the popular synth keyboards of the 1970-80's. Marc grew up not on radio hits but on 1970's progressive rock greats like Yes, E.L.P, and Genesis. Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson flooded through the air on a daily basis. Not only was the music played frequently but his fathers keyboard collection also left an impact on Marc. A Roland Juno 60 & 106... Two classic 80's keyboards left Marc to experiment, learn, and play what one day he would come to find he loves to do.
It wasn't until his high school days in the suburbs when Marc really started to take interest in creating music on his own or with friends. Around this time he saw a multitude of bands in his area come and go and decided to jump into the action full force. Taking up the guitar he formed his first band which started as a cover band to 80's metal groups like Iron Maiden. All the while, experimenting with computer audio software programs and beat machines. He then went on to play in virtually all aspects of musical acts. From playing bass for punk, hardcore, and metal bands to producing hip-hop beats and playing keyboard and guitar to indie rock bands.
After much experimenting and experience itself over the course of about 7 years, Marc decided to try focus all of his energy on his solo career as an artist. It started with opening his mind more to music and listening to everything and learning to appreciate music for what it is and learning how he could re-create it. In 2007 Marc began heavily producing club inspired remixes which lead him to take on his first big role and follow his fathers footsteps in becoming a DJ. Playing all types of music in a few small clubs across Chicago and at friends parties.
The inspiration to 'The Pillars of Creation' came up as a name and for the first 2 years of its existence and many attempts at electronic music, Marc caught wind of 'Washed Out' in summer of 2009 and that started the wave inside him. Already heavily electronically inspired by Ariel Pink, m83, and Boards of Canada, Marc took much inspiration from the likes of Ernest Greene's music. Though much thanks goes out to bands like Washed Out, Marc has created a wave of nostalgia all his own for years to come.
While taking a trip with The Pillars Of Creation, your ears will be overcome with an arrangement of catchy keyboard riffs, danceable beats, shoegaze esk vocals, and endless reverb that will make you feel like you've been transcended back in time to a beach in 1980's Miami.
