Ever since his childhood and adolescence, MA has a very stable and fame had played with some of the best orchestras in the world. His recordings and performances of the Suites for solo cello Johann Sebastian Bach are particularly acclaimed.

In 1978 , Ma married Jill Hornor violinist. They have two children, Nicholas and Emily. His older sister, Yeouido-Cheng Ma, also born in Paris, is a violinist and along with Yo-Yo is coordinating a project called Children's Orchestra Society (COS) in Long Island , in the U.S. .
Currently, Ma plays the Silk Road Project , which aims to join musicians from around the world countries through which passed the historic Silk Road .
As announced by the Secretary General of the United Nations , Kofi Annan in January 2006 , Ma has joined the list of ambassadors of peace the UN , like many other musicians such as tenor Luciano Pavarotti and jazz musician Wynton Marsalis , among others.

The main instrument of performance-Yo Ma Yao is Petunia , made by Domenico Montagnana in Venice in 1733 . This instrument has been forgotten in the backseat of a taxi in New York, but later recovered unharmed.
Another cello is used by Ma stradivarius Davidov , previously played by Jacqueline du Pre and Ma fetch the value of one million dollars, after the death of its former owner. Du Pre had already expressed his frustration at the unpredictability of that cello, while Ma joins it to the passionate style of du Pre playing the cello and says that this needs to be tamed by his instruments. Until recently, this cello was used only for the performance of Baroque music . Ma also has a carbon fiber cello, created by Luis & Clark .

Yo-Yo Ma is commonly cited by critics as " the most omnivorous of all cellists "and in fact has a much more eclectic repertoire than is expected for a classical musician.
Ma has performed and recorded countless pieces of Baroque music and other schools of classical music on period instruments or modern. Also make up their repertoire pieces of traditional and popular music, such as the soundtrack of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon . Tangos Argentines of Astor Piazzolla , Brazilian music , sheet music and minimalist from Philip Glass to Naqoyqatsi .
His last album ( As of 2006 ) is the result of collaboration with several other musicians Ma, for the soundtrack of the film Memoirs of a Geisha .
Yo-Yo Ma usually proved open to different musical forms of classical music and classical as jazz and tango. In addition, his works often incorporate traditional forms of musicality and primitive when, for example, plays with members of the People of the savannas of the Kalahari Desert in Africa .
Ma also sponsored the early years of East-Western Divan Orchestra (founded by him and Edward Said ), the Arab-Israeli orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim (whose name divan in Arabic means meeting).

Recently, Ma also met with Steve Jobs , chairman of Apple and Pixar . Yo-Yo Ma is often invited to press events for Jobs's companies, having come to play on stage during a keynote speech at an event hosted by Apple's Jobs.
