Heechul was born in Gangwon-do, South Korea to a bourgeois family. He has an older sister, Kim Heejin.
He joined under the management of SM Entertainment after he auditioned in the Starlight Casting System in 2002 when he was in Seoul. Along with Hero, U-Know, and future Super Junior bandmate Kangin, their talent agency placed them in a small project music group called Four Seasons, with each of the four members representing the four seasons of the year. The prospective group never saw the light when the two members, Hero and U-Know, were chosen to join another all-male singing group TVXQ, which debuted in December 2003.
With two members gone, the idea of Four Seasons dropped. The remaining two members of Four Seasons, Heechul and Kangin, were then placed in another project group, Super Junior, along with ten other trainees under the same company. This project group managed through well, and debuted two years later in 2005 under the name Super Junior 05, the first generation of Super Junior.
On November 6, 2005, Heechul finally debuted with the other eleven members in Super Junior 05 on SBS's music program Popular Songs (인기가요), performing the first single "TWINS (Knock Out)." The group released their full studio album a month later, and the album debuted as #3 on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts. As the group's second single, "Miracle", came to an end, his talent agency was about to recruit new members for the next Super Junior generation, Super Junior 06, with Heechul still as an undergraduate member of Super Junior. However, plans changed when the company added in a thirteenth member, Kyuhyun, and the company declared that future Super Junior generations were rumors. The group dropped the suffix "05" and became officially Super Junior. The new group hit it big after they released their first CD single "U" the following summer in 2006, which became Super Junior's most successful single in the music charts, leading Super Junior to set #1 records in their music career since then.
In early 2007, Heechul was placed in Super Junior's second sub-unit, Super Junior-T, a six-piece trot-singing subgroup. The group debuted on February 25, 2007 on Popular Songs with their title song, "Rokkugo". Super Junior-T released their first single, "Rokkugo" on February 23, 2007, ultimately selling 45,998 units by the end of the year, ranked as the sixteenth best-selling album of the year and the first best-selling single of the year. Super Junior-T ended subgroup activities in the end of the year and in September, Super Junior as a whole released their second official album, Don't Don, which became the second best-selling album of the year.
Heechul has made many contributions to Super Junior's lyrics. His first production, along with bandmates Shindong and Eunhyuk, was the rap lyrics to "Show Me Your Love," a joint single of Super Junior with TVXQ.
