ABN
There are two artists named ABN. (A.B.N. is not an official artist name for either).
ABN from US:
The long awaited union of the rappers Z-Ro and Trae; forming Assholes By Nature.
It Is What It Is is a studio album from cousins Z-Ro & Trae. It includes 18 tracks including ‘Umm Umm’, ‘Who’s The Man’ and ‘S.O.S. (Slap On Sight)’. Although Z-Ro & Trae have worked together on several songs in the past few years, this is the first album together since 2003’s Resurrected when they still went by the name of Guerilla Maab. A chopped and screwed version by Michael “5000” Watts was released on August 26, 2008.
ABN from Belgium:
ABN (which is an abbreviation for ‘Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands’ (general civilized Dutch in English)) is a Flemish hiphop group. Besides other Flemish hiphop groups like ’t Hof van Commerce and K.I.A. (Krapoel in Axe), ABN is the only one that doesn’t rap in a specific dialect.
ABN was founded in the mid nineties by rapper Quinte Ridz and Pita, artist name of Saïd Aghassaiy, the man who produced the beats and music. Some of their popular tracks are Barbietrut (Barbiesnollen), Algemeen Beskaafd Nederlanz and Breekpunt. They also co-operate with other artists. On the track Ex-liefdadigheid you can hear Luc De Vos sing, the frontman of the Belgian band Gorki. Marcel Vanthilt also sings the refrain in Kanonnevlees.
ABN’s debute album Abnormaal was well received by the press and their single Algemeen Beskaafd Nederlanz (a co-operation between the Dutch nederhop-formation Osdorp Posse) immediately entered in ‘De Afrekening’ (Listener’s hitparade) on Studio Brussel (a Flemish radio station). The group also performed on the first day on the festival Torhout-Werchter (later renamed to Rock Werchter) in july 1998 on the famous Main Stage. In 1999, Pita left the group. Before that, members MHD and Khattabi already left the group, but after that, Quinte became twice as active as before. He released the third ABN-single Vet En Fonky.
In April 2000, ABN came out with their second album, Seriewoordenaar (a pun on the Dutch word ‘seriemoordenaar’ (serial killer), where ‘woordenaar’ is a fictive designation for ‘a person who is good/creative with words’). It was released on the Dutch label DJax and they also received the Rap Award on the TMF Awards.
Built on the succes of their previous two albums, they release their third album Nachtschade in 2001, for which they received the TMF Award for Best Rap and R&B for the second year in row.
In 2003, they released their fourth album Kanonnevlees, which took two years to produce, freestyle and record in their own studio. After that, it’s been quiet for a while. In 2006 they came out with a new single, Asfaltrocker, which was well received by music TV stations JIM and TMF and radio station Studio Brussel. In february 2009, their album Batterijzuur was released.
