Figures On A Beach
Figures on a Beach was a new wave techno pop band that formed in Detroit, Michigan in the early 1980s (out of the prior band Razor 1922).They gigged around clubs like Clutch Cargo and Bookies with vocalist Anthony Kaczynski, guitarist John Rolski, keyboardist Christopher Ewen, bassist Perry Tell, and drummer, Michael "Smitt E Smitty" Smith. Figures on a Beach recorded an independent EP, Swimming, in 1983, and the Don Was-produced single "Breathless" in 1984. They moved to Boston in 1985 and were signed by Seymour Stein of Sire Records soon after. Their first full length LP surfaced in 1987, entitled Standing on Ceremony with the emphasis track and video for " No Stars" , but the group's sound was a little late for the 80's party and a radio campaign & tour to support the record weren't very rewarding.
A self-titled LP Figures on a Beach followed in 1989, containing a minor club hit cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and another 12" club track entitled, "Accidentally 4th Street (Gloria)" .
Despite a sound similar to labelmates like Depeche Mode, grunge was right behind them, and the group disbanded by the early 90's. Anthony Kaczynski went on to become the founder of Fireking. Chris Ewen started Future Bible Heroes with Stephin Merritt.
July 2008 has seen the long overdue CD re-issue of Standing On Ceremony, the debut full-length album by Figures On A Beach. It is the first time ever that this album has been released on CD and their Sire material is also online as downloads via Amazon and the iTunes store.
