Pustki
Pustki is Polish band formed in 1999, in a small town, Ostrówek, near Warsaw. Their discography includes five albums: "Studio Pustki" (Antena Krzyku, April 2001), "8 Ohm" (Polskie Radio, April 2004), "Do Mi No" (Polskie Radio, March 2006), "Koniec kryzysu" (Agora, 2008) and "Kalambury" (Agora, 2009).
Journalists have always problems with describing the music of Pustki with one term. For those who read the critics of "Studio Pustki" (LP, Antena Krzyku, 2001) the mysterious inventions like: proto-rock, impro-pre-punk-rock, are, if nothing else, meaningless.
The members of the band say that their music is to be "emotional, unpredictable and of a noble simplicity". In reality, Pustki (The Empties) play songs which are very melodic on one hand, and raw, on the other. The tunes, the way of recording them and the archaic sound of instruments may remind the listener about the rebellious music of ’60 and ’70, but the compositions and arrangements sound quite modern. These songs are often catchy enough to become single hits.
The second album "8 Ohm" released in may 2004 is already considered by Polish critics as an alternative album of the year. It shows another face of the band: more melancholic and calm, but with more sophisticated arrangements (strings, vibraphone, harmonium, electronic rhythms). The band calls it "MUSIC OF THE EASTERN EUROPE", and indeed, it doesn’t sound like music from California, England or France. It is the sound of this part of the world. During the very energetic concerts the group shows also its another feature: the improvisation. This element makes the performances varied and difficult to foresee.
